Academic Research

Here are some of my areas of interest. I employ a variety of qualitative and quantitative study methods including experimental, survey, interview, and field studies. My analysis techniques range from statistical methods, such as structural equation modeling, to building grounded theory through open-coding, constant comparison, and purposeful sampling.

Location-Sharing Social Media

My current thesis work focuses on multiple aspects of location-sharing social media:

This work has resulted in several publications (see publications) and some more under review (contact me directly for more information). This research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Disney Research, and now Samsung.

Green Transportation

In conjunction with Disney Research, we investigated carpooling incentives and the possibility of using location-sharing services for dynamic carpooling.

Social Navigation

I investigated the influence of social navigation in instant messaging on how people set their privacy preferences. See our CSCW '11 paper for more information. This work was funded by National Science Foundation grants.

Information Disclosure

We are studying information disclosure behaviors in interpersonal relationships and comparing them with disclosure behaviors towards organizations.

Haptic Navigation for Global Position Systems (GPS)

I investigated and developed new haptic interactions with GPS for Toyota (back in 2003!). This included safer and simpler navigation interactions. We built novel haptic inputs and outputs. This work was funded by Toyota and Stanford University.
