Recently, the energy accumulated from the technological advancements such as PDAs, wireless networks and sensors have pushed computation out from the desktop and workplace into our everyday lives. With the change of the setting where computation is embedded, the role of computation, and the relationship between computer and people have to be reconsidered. I like technologies that can engage our various senses, or can facilitate expression, communication, and sharing between people, not just because they are interesting, but also because they can foster awareness, enhance intellectual and emotional growth, and strengthen social connections. I dislike technologies that are boring or invasive, trying to take control of our lives. I think it is a matter of balance, and it is my ambition to find the balance and to tranform the power of computation into a warmer and more humane world. Technically speaking, I am interested in various topics such as ambient display, intimate communication, affective computing, CSCW, computer mediated communications, and informative arts. Expressive computing is an umbrella term that I use to include all of them.
