The purpose of this Workshop on 8-9 October is to help contribute to development of a research agenda that will serve as input to NSF in its effort to create a research program and agenda on "the science of design" that may subsequently appear as an Request For Proposals in early 2004. Clearly, our mission is to focus on the role of design in open source software development (OSSD), and how it may differ from approaches traditional to software engineering and software system design tools. Thus, in our Workshop we will address topics such as design processes and practices in OSSD, discovering OSS design processes, recovering OSS designs, the emergent design of OSSD communities and social networks, and others.
